- The curtain rod should be positioned at least 4-6" above the window frame or preferably all the way to the ceiling. This elongates your walls giving the illusion of taller ceilings.
- Your curtains should reach the floor. Avoid a short curtain situation.
- Extend the rod beyond the window frame so that when your drapes are open, they don’t cover the window. This will bring in more light and give the illusion of a wider window.
- Hang drapes on both sides of the window, even single windows! And don’t be afraid to double up on curtain panels for an even fuller look.

]]>Inspired by an existing painting of pink proteas in the house, we developed the design and colour palette to bring together old pieces with the new, tied together with touches of red, pink and grey.
We reupholstered many of the existing furniture pieces, whilst we custom made new sofas for the lounge, as well as headboards and ottomans for the bedrooms. Curtains were added to soften the windows in a light and breezy sheer, to compliment the seaside location.
We updated the layout in areas to give a better flow and add to the feeling of space. Take a look at the completed project:

The project featured a bush location, so the design pays homage to the natural surrounds both in colour and texture. Adding piping and natural woods as well as geometric yet ethnic nuances in the fabrics brought the story to life while blending with the wild exterior.
Colder shades of teal combine with ochre and grey to bring balance to the scheme, mimicking an autumn bush scene. An image of a giraffe set against the background of thorny African bush during an Autumn sunset was at the core of the inspiration for this theme.

A change of season means a perfect opportunity to switch things up for the colder days ahead. A cost-effective way to do this? Update your accessories to create a warmer, cozier space that can be switched out again just as easily when Summers rolls round.

The wave curtain is perfect for creating a contemporary style that's simple and elegant. This header system allows the curtain to hand in a continuous, smooth wave that works well in sheers, as well as solid fabrics. We love the minimalism of this curtain hanging directly from the ceiling for a clean, modern finish. We also love the effect of matching the wall and curtain colour for maximum impact!
2. THE PANELLED WAVE
Now here's a design idea for a modern wave curtain combining serene hues of ivory, grey and soft sky blue to create an eye-catching finish that's still classic and calming. Get the look using the Stonewash collection, an inexpensive curtaining fabric with a subtle texture, in a selection of natural colourways.
3. MODERN FLORAL WAVE
A subtle floral-inspired print combined with an ivory boarder really give these grey drapes just the right amount of detail to bring some added warmth to this modern space, without weighing it down in something too heavy or old fashioned.
4. VELOUR GLAMOUR

We love roman blinds as a functional window dressing, which also offer the opportunity to add some decorative flair to a space. Unlike other blind options, you have the option to add different patterns, finishes and trims to create something unique with your styling and fabric selection. Take a look at some of these inspired ideas for inspiration:
1. A fabulous idea to add real interest to a space with contrasting patterns that create a striking effect with a simple window dressing.
2. A trim border in a neutral tone adds a classic touch of interest to elevate this otherwise plain blind into a subtle statement.
3. Using a bold, bright pattern can instantly add character to a plain space, giving it an instant point of view.
4. We love the use of contrasting tones of the same texture to create an understated detail on this living room blind. Simple, stylish and elegant.
5. If you have a few windows to cover, don't be governed by just one fabric selection. Mixing and matching patterns in a complimentary colour palette is an easy way to add instant style. This is a fabulous idea in a kids room or play room.
6.If you require a pelmet for your blinds, using the same fabric for both the blind and the pelmet and matching up the pattern will create a uniform look that's easy on the eye.
7. Sheer linen and linen-look window dressings are trending in a big way. This sheer roman blind is just gorgeous!
8.For those looking to create a statement, bold trims or accents that pick up on other colour accents around the room are a brilliant way to finish off a space.
INSPIRED FOR YOUR OWN HOME?
]]>Airbnb has taken the country by storm, with an estimated 14 000 rooms now available in Cape Town alone, many locals are cashing in on the short term rentals market. In such a competitive market, it’s important to stand out amongst the crowd. A good way to do that? Your décor choices, of course. Not only will better decor give your short term rental listing the edge, a fresh, modern space will enhance your guest experience, resulting in better ratings and better occupancy.
Table Bay Curtains recently partnered with Stuart Graham Fabrics to complete a master bedroom makeover at a city apartment, managed by Airbnb specialists Superhost SA.
To illustrate how to decorate a short term rental/ Airbnb listing for maximum guest comfort, and maximum return, giving away insider tips and tricks on how to get it just right, and on a budget.
The master bedroom of this 2-bed city apartment was in dire need of some TLC. Oversized, mismatched furniture, combined with badly hung curtains, a stained carpet and an uncoordinated colour palette were making for a dull, messy and uninviting space.
TOP TIP:We recommend planning a large makeover holistically, ahead of time. Contact suppliers to understand lead times on items you intend to order. Flooring, curtaining, installation, painting etc will all require different timelines to completion. Plan these correctly and you will only need to block out your listing for a week to complete all updates. A quiet week in low season is ideal to minimize the impact on occupancy. |
We opted for creating a functional, modern space that was warm and inviting, yet modern and practical to clean. Take a look at the results:
The starting point for this modern makeover was a fresh coat of white paint to brighten the room and provide an instant refresh. TOP TIP: Remove all old fixtures before poly filling and painting to ensure a smooth finish.
A large, upholstered headboard adds luxury and comfort. This headboard was covered in a dark, poly-linen that is hard wearing and practical, with the look and feel of real linen texture. UPHOLSTERY SERVICE: TABLE BAY CURTAINS FABRIC: SG FABRICS - SIMPLICITY BOUCLE GUNMETAL |
Mixing pattern and texture with printed scatters and throws adds visual interest and warmth. MAKE UP: TABLE BAY CURTAINS FABRIC: SG FABRICS, JAVA - LOMBOK ONYX |
This long scatter adds a gorgeous finishing touch to the bed. We selected a linen-look plain in a complementary stone colour and finished it off with slick piping, made from leftover fabric from the headboard.
MAKE UP: TABLE BAY CURTAINS
FABRIC: SG FABRICS - OSLO GRANITE
The bedroom is completed with large, black steel side tables, modern lamps and local-inspired art prints to balance out the roller blind on the right hand side of the bed.
A ready-made curtain adds some much needed softness to the space. Placing a well-gathered sheer over the roller blind on the main window allows for natural light and added privacy whilst the roller blind is open. Whilst ready-made curtains are a cost-effective solution, professional installation can make all the difference in achieving the right end result on a budget. The Table Bay Curtains installation team have ensured a perfect finish with a professional installation. We spoke to Brigid Prinsloo, CEO of Superhost SA to gain further insight into where the most value can be added to your listing when it comes to decor.
A: Most Airbnb guests in Cape Town are tourists out exploring all day or business people who spend most of the day in meetings. With this in mind we always place an emphasis on those spaces guests will spend the most time in when they are actually at home:
(1) The Bedroom: The majority of the time guests spend in a listing is in bed sleeping. We always make sure the decor is modern, the bedding is crisp, the pillows fluffy and that there is a soft throw for cooler nights.
(2) Kitchen: While the guests certainly do not cook up a storm, the need for a strong cup of coffee first thing in the morning seems to be universal. We always make sure we provide guests with coffee press/ coffee machine as well as some initial supplies (in case they have not yet gone to the shops).
(3) Bathroom: There is absolutely nothing worse that an dirty bathroom. As an Airbnb host this area needs to be 100% spotless. Throw in soft towels, hotel style amenities and definitely a hair dryer for the ladies.

Here at Table Bay Curtains we've put together some fresh ideas to inspire your next designer scatter. With so many beautiful fabrics to choose from, and our in-house make up team ready to take on any design requirement, we like to think outside of the box to make the most of the humble scatter.
If creativity strikes and you're in need of new scatters, get in touch with us for beautiful fabric options and make up services to turn your idea into your perfect scatter. Take a look at some inspired ideas:
Mixing multiple colours from the same fabric collection adds a beautiful colour blocking effect thats still simple and chic. We love the look of this textured plain in multiple colourways to make up this perfect set of scatters.
This simple idea packs a lot of punch! Piping in a bright colour instantly adds a designer touch against a textured grey plain. We love this look for something subtle yet effective in terms of adding bold colour to a neutral space.
Mixing textures by sewing geometric designs into the scatter is a clever alternative to a standard geometric print fabric. Its a bold move that adds even more texture into the scatter cushion.
Mixing complementary prints into one cushion is a sure fire way to maximise character in your design. We like the addition of a printed border in the example below:
Exposed zips are a trendy addition to instantly give your scatter the designer touch. We love these printed and plain combinations in natural, textured fabrics offset by a large, gold exposed zip.
Mixing materials adds even more design options. One trending look right now is the addition of leather accents. We adore how this scandinavian-inspired trend of simple, sleek design is making it's way into mainstream decor.
Metallics are making their way into home decor this year in all sorts of ways, and your scatters should be no exception. Adding metallics on the trim and detailing in your scatter cushion design is the perfect way to add a subtle highlight.
Micro prints give an interesting design look, adding loads of visual texture. We love this horizontal break across this rectangular scatter created by pairing two complementary micro prints. Top Top: Use two different prints in the same colourway to keep the look stylish and low-key.
At Table Bay Curtains our Cape Town based store stocks a wide variety of high-quality fabrics and even leathers for you to choose from. Our workroom can also make up any cushion in any style based on your requirement.
